Cost Savings with Day Reporting

A compelling reason to reevaluate your county’s response
to jail overcrowding is high costs that cut into other important community funding needs. Jails are expensive to build
($70,000 to $100,000 per bed) and costly to operate ($50 to $100 per bed per day).

Jail overcrowding costs are accumulated in many areas: new jail construction, ongoing operations, overtime, new staffing, expanded inmate services, inmate medical costs, and costs
to house inmates elsewhere. By diverting appropriate inmates from jail, a Day Reporting Center program can reduce these costs.

In addition, Day Reporting Centers do not provide housing, meals, medical care, security officers, or transportation. Offenders are responsible for their own costs in these areas.
